The Economic, Lands, Environment, and Natural Resources Pillar plays a vital role in supporting sustainable development, land stewardship, and resource management within Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory. This pillar is essential for advancing self-determination, economic resilience, and environmental sustainability.

Portfolio Holders from Council serve as liaisons between the Pillar Committee and Council. The committee includes community members and works closely with the Chief Executive Officer,  Directors, and Program Managers to implement strategic goals.

All actions are guided by the Wiikwemkoong Gchi-Naaknigewin and the Seven Grandfather Teachings. Here’s a breakdown of its purpose and responsibilities:

Purpose

  • Help the community grow in ways that respect our culture and are led by the people who live here.

  • Make sure we use and take care of our land and natural resources in a way that lasts for future generations.

  • Give the community more say and power in making decisions about our land and resources.

  • Work together with governments, businesses, and other groups to create more chances for jobs and growth in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Manage lands and resources under laws such as the Indian Act and First Nations Land Management Act.

  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and community standards.
  • Prevent contamination and promote environmental stewardship on reserve lands.
  • Balance individual and collective interests in land use decisions.
  • Guide development through traditional teachings, governance policies, and strategic plans.
