Summary
The Health & Safety Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive occupational health and safety program for Wikwemikong Health Centre. This role ensures a safe, healthy, and culturally respectful environment for employees, patients, and community members by promoting compliance with legislation, healthcare standards, and best practices. The health and safety officer provides leadership, technical guidance, and training to staff, while fostering a proactive safety culture grounded in community values and workplace wellness.

Responsibilities
1. Develop and maintain health and safety policies, procedures, and programs for healthcare services.
2. Monitor compliance with health and safety laws and update practices as needed.
3. Conduct inspections, audits, hazard assessments, and risk mitigation.
4. Advise management and staff on workplace safety issues.
5. Track incidents, injuries, and near misses, and recommend prevention strategies.
6. Support investigations, documentation, and regulatory compliance.
7. Coordinate return-to-work plans and modified duties.
8. Deliver safety training, orientations, and staff awareness sessions.
9. Help develop emergency response plans and lead drills.
10. Support JHSC activities and collaborate with departments and external partners.
11. Promote wellness, injury prevention, mental health, and culturally appropriate safety practices grounded in Anishinaabe values.

Qualifications
• Diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Public Health, or related field.
• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in occupational health and safety.
• Experience working in a First Nation or Indigenous organization is an asset.
• WHMIS, First Aid/CPR, and Occupational Health & Safety training required.
• CRSP or equivalent certification is an asset.
• Valid driver’s license is required.
• Strong knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety legislation and standards.
• Ability to conduct inspections, risk assessments, and safety program evaluations.
• Excellent communication, facilitation, and report writing skills.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data tracking systems.
• Understanding First Nation community values, governance, and cultural safety.
