Wikwemikong Health Centre
Summary
This position supports culturally relevant, wholistic Children’s Services Programs for children ages 0–6 and their families through Wikwemikong Health Centre. The Maternal Child Health Nurse provides prenatal, postnatal, and neonatal care, offers home and office visits to support new mothers and newborns, collaborates with healthcare partners on child development and immunizations, and contributes to community projects that strengthen services for young children and families.
Responsibilities
1. Ensure resources are used in the best way possible in order to produce measurable and positive outcomes for children 0 – 6 years, their parents, families and community.
2. To deliver comprehensive community health programs which include the following: enable the maternal and newborn population and their families to achieve and maintain an optimal level of health and development from pre-conception, pregnancy, birth and early adjustment to parenting.
3. To plan, organize and implement the programming that promotes a balanced wholistic health care approach, incorporating physical, mental, social/environment and emotional/spiritual aspects to meet the needs of 0–6-year children and their families. To plan programs according to these basic health and cultural indicators utilizing the Children’s Bill of Rights.
4. Adhere within the time frames and budget identified in Children’s Services Program work plan for program delivery to ensure funding requirements and reporting deadlines are met. This specifically includes adherence to the Community Based Reporting Template for federal funding completed annually.
5. To collaborate, communicate, establish and maintain positive working relationships with community, organizations and agencies for meeting program needs, i.e. Library, Prevention Services, Ontario Works, and Primary Care.
6. To pursue professional development relative to community nursing and utilize self-reflective practice.
7. The Registered nurse will ensure through the various means of case management to coordinate an effective program delivery for the best outcome of the client occurs and to assist families with access to services for those living with complex issues or with children who require special needs.
Qualifications
o Baccalaureate in Nursing from a Canadian University or 3-year College Diploma in nursing.
o Certificate of competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario, with knowledge and understanding of College Standards of Practice.
o Member of Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) with Legal Assistance Program (LAP).
o Demonstrate strong clinical skills in assessment of infants and young children and pregnant women.
o Current Standard First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C Certification.
o Ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure.
o Two (2) years’ experience working in a First Nation community or equivalent organization.
o Knowledge and understanding of First Nation health concerns and issues, and the ability to apply knowledge and skill in the development and implementation of programs to address identified needs.
o Adaptability and ability to establish and sustain a multidisciplinary team approach to integrated service delivery.
o Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including proficiency in computer applications, especially Microsoft Office.
o Ability to maintain confidentiality and be an example of professionalism, as identified by Wiikwemkoong.
