Wiikwemkoong Working to Preserve Forests, Fight Climate Change
Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory is pleased to announce a partnership with Finite Carbon Canada to start a forest carbon project in our Territory.
This project will take place on about 42,000 hectares of forest within Wiikwemkoong’s 63,000-hectare land base. Over the next 40 years, there is a commitment to limit commercial logging and to working with community members to care for the forest.
By keeping forests healthy and intact, we help fight climate change. Trees store carbon and protecting them prevents the release of carbon that would happen if the forest was cut down.
The project will follow a recognized carbon offset protocol called the ‘Improved Forest Management for Canadian Forestlands’, developed by the American Carbon Registry. It will also use a flexible approach to measuring forest impact to make sure the climate benefits are real and ongoing.
“Working with Wiikwemkoong to advance climate goals is an honour and we are excited to begin the development of the project,” stated David Stevenson, President of Finite Carbon. “We believe that this kind of project can advance both economic reconciliation with First Nations in Canada as well as increase the carbon sequestration needed to fight climate change. “
The project will provide both own source revenue for Wiikwemkoong as well as work for the Wiikwemkoong Forest Resources Inventory Program over the next 20 years. The first credits are expected to be issued in late fall 2026.
“Our values as Anishinabek are central to this project, as stewards of the land, we see the benefits of this project – for not only the preservation of resources, but the other positive impacts to the environment,” stated Ogimaa Tim Ominika of Wiikwemkoong.
“Our team has done the research and due diligence needed, and we are pleased to begin this project with Finite Carbon Canada,” added Ogimaa Ominika.
